Architecture: Design and Research

Synopsis

One of the objectives for this Architecture: Design and Research Seminar is to debate the dialectics between the practice of architecture and research in architecture, analyzing, based on consolidated author paths, the type of relationships that can be established between these two professional domains. Does architectural research support the practice of architecture? And, is the project’s practice a safe research base? Where does the motivation for investigating issues come from? Is heritage a common stimulus factor? Are there other factors? Can we admit that there are common methods or methods adapted between the practice of architecture and research?
We propose the presentation of a set of conferences held by architects and researchers with relevant and significant readings in the field of scientific knowledge, heterogeneous methodological proposals and wide and distinctive dissemination relationships.

Waterfront books present the outcomes of EWWUD – European Workshops on Waterfront Urban Design, which have been organized by DAU-ULHT since 2010. EWWUD are international workshops that gather researchers and architecture and urban planning students from several continents in an event for cooperation and sharing of knowledge, and of broad experience and differentiated pedagogical approaches.

This new book, Waterfront Tagus River Gateway, features the outcomes of EWWUD 2017, that gathered professors and students from seven European countries, and the outcomes of Tagus Mouth Joint Studio ULHT-UNSW 2017, that brought to Portugal a large group of students from  University of New South Wales – Sydney, Australia. Both events analysed sites on the Tagus Estuary located on the waterfronts of Almada and Oeiras municipalities, aiming to conceive proposals to mitigate the heightened risk brought by climate change.

This book presentation is part of present EWWUD 2019 event, taking place in Lisbon between the 11th and 22nd March 2019, with the overall theme Waterfront Climate Change – Sustainable Open Solutions, and focusing on the waterfronts at Cascais, Alcochete and Ribeira d’Ilhas. The book will be presented by Professors Pedro Ressano Garcia (DAU-ULHT), Maria Rita Pais (DAU-ULHT) and Karen Lehmann (Ruhr-Universität Bochum).
